Our South American odyssey is a study of contrasts: the cosmopolitan allure of Buenos Aires with its long standing as the cultural, political and social nexus of the country; and Salta, which still retains its Wild West atmosphere because of its remoteness.
Salta has become famous for its white wine, Torrontes which at its best exudes a crisp acidity and spicy floral aroma. This area has become the 2nd most important Argentine wine region, yet it is visited by very few tourists. We’ll be sure to receive VIP welcomes at all our winery visits. Vin also plans to include the spectacular scenery of the Conchas river valley, named a UNESCO natural monument.
On April 10,we leave for Argentina’s premier wine region: Mendoza. The comparison of Mendoza with Napa Valley is very appropriate. Nicolas Catena, the pioneer of the modern era of Argentine wines, was deeply influenced by Robert Mondavi and was determined to be the inspiration for the rebirth of Mendoza and its wines. Today his winery, which we’ll be sure to visit, is symbolized by its striking architecture which blends the old with the new.
Vin’s first tour to Argentina was over 10 years ago and he has witnessed the phenomenal growth of the wine industry to its current rank as one of the foremost wine regions in the world.
Using the picturesque colonial city of Mendoza as our home, we’ll have ample opportunity to experience the best this region has to offer in food and wine. And we’ll also appreciate the legacy of the Incas whose engineering expertise helped create an oasis in the middle of desert conditions.
Mendoza has attracted some of the best wine people from throughout the world and we’ll have a better appreciation of why Mendoza and Malbec have become so important.
