Today was another day in Paradise for Wine Lovers! We started at Chateau Vieux Lazaret in Chateauneuf-du-Pape with Florence Quiot, the winemaker’s daughter, leading us on a walking tour of two of their vineyards. Vieux Lazaret is one of the largest producers in town and we caught the tail end of harvest.
Then her father, Jerome, joined us for a winery tour and lunch at the winery. We tasted Chateauneuf white, a blend of 4 white wine grapes: bourbalenc, roussane, grenache blanc and clairette; Cotes du Rhone Villages ’06 Sablet which is a 50/50 blend of mourvedre and grenache and Chateauneuf-du-Pape ’08, a blend of up to 13 grape varieties.
We learned that there are 4 levels of the Southern Rhone appellations: Cotes du Rhone; Cotes du Rhone Villages; Cotes du Rhone Villages with name of village specified; (there are 17 villages); Cru bottlings, such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, of which there are 18.
We then went across town to Chateau La Nerthe, also the recipient of numerous 90+ Parker scores. After a private tour of the estate we were treated to a tasting of 7 outstanding wines: Chateauneuf blanc ’09 (same 4 grapes as Lazaret); Clos de Beauvenir ’05, a blend of Roussane and clairette 100% barrique aged; Prieuré de Montézargues ’09 Tavel- 55% grenache, 30% Cinsault, clairette; Cotes du Rhone Villages Massif d’Uchaux Domaine de la Renjarde- a blend of mostly grenache with syrah, cinsault, mourvedre and carignan; La Nerthe ’07, a traditional blend of 10 grapes; La Nerthe ’05 and La Nerthe Cuvée des Cadettes ’05- wow- outstanding all!
We ended this glorious day with a tasting at Chateau d’Aqueria, one of Tavel’s most prominent producers. We tasted the Tavel ’09, a blend of 6 grapes; Lirac ’07- grenache 50% + 50/50 mourvedre & syrah; and the highlight: L’Heritage ’07- a blend of 40/40 mourvedre & grenache + 20 syrah; very limited production none of which gets to the US.
What a great final day of wine tastings!
