What a glorious beginning to our unique “La Famiglia” tour. Everyone arrived safely, we had a beautiful orientation of Naples by bus and then we went out to eat. I was in high heaven when I was able to order squash flowers stuffed with ricotta, one of the few items that would make me crawl on my knees.

About 10 0f the group followed me on a walking tour of old Naples- Spaccanapoli- as it’s called. A labyrinth of tiny alleyways dating from the Roman era. We were able to visit at least 6 churches and the street famous for production of  its nativity figurines.

Today everyone is on their own; most chose to go to Capri and I suggested they do the Grotta Azzurra and the chairlift to the top of Anacapri; that is not be missed if you ever get to Capri.

Someone may ask why did you stay in Naples instead of Sorrento or Positano and the answer is pretty simple: first this tour is a homage to our ancestors who emigrated from this area to the States, leaving from the port of Naples. Some lived in Naples but most came from surrounding towns and villages. When I was a boy, my grandfather asked if I were Napolitan or Marchegian. I had no concept at the time of what those terms meant but I do now.

Naples also is a great city. OK, it is gritty and grimy in many spots, but once you’ve seen the Galleria Umberto, the San Carlo Opera House, the Archeological Museum, the coast line from Santa Lucia to Posillippo, just to cite a few of Naples’ top sites, you’ll know why Naples used to be part of The Grand Tour of the 1800’s.

Tomorrow we leave for Buccino to spend a weekend during the centuries’ old Festa della Madonna. We’ll report on what we saw and what we ate.
