Grand Finale in Tuscany

By October 6, 2012Winemakers

I didn’t think we could do better than yesterday but today was another sublime day in Tuscany. We only had two visits, but what visits! Note: You can see more photos from today by visiting our album on our Facebook page.

First we started at Castello di Volpaia with a private tour of the village, winery and frantoia. Then we had lunch in the villa with Giovanella Stianti as our hostess. Because the weather was so

glorious, we were able to have lunch on the patio. Our appetizers were fried sage leaves, fried zucchini flowers and tomato bruschetta accompanied by Vermentino ’11 and Prelius ’09, both from the Volpaia winery in Bolgheri. Then we had lasagna with tomato sauce and mozzarella with the Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva ’08, a Tre Bicchieri winner; this was followed by veal rolls and braised endives with tomatos accompanied by Ballifico ’08, their supertuscan red. Our dessert was chocolate ice cream with Vinsanto ’06.

Harvest at Volpaia

We continued on the Chainti wine road Route 222 onto the spectacular Castello d’Albola. Owed by the Zonin family, we couldn’t visit the villa because the family was visiting. But we did get a private tour of the entire facility, including the vinsantaio so we saw how this dessert wine is produced. The two varieties of white grapes are harvested and left in trays for 6 weeks until the grapes become raisin-like.

We were spoiled by a tasting of their top wines: Chardonnay IGT ’11; Le Ellere Chianti Classico ’09, a Tre Bicchieri winner; Chianti Classico Riserva ’06, another Tre Bicchieri winner; Il Solatio IGT ’08, a 100% sangiovese wine with such little production that it’s only sold at the winery; Acciaiolo IGT ’07 from 60% sangiovese and 40% cabernet; Vinsanto ’06

The Frantoia at Volpaia

On our way home, we stopped at a gelateria reputed to be one of the best in Tuscany, and also to pose for a group photo.

Tomorrow is a free day and the tour ends with our traditional farewell dinner to be held at the 5 star Hotel Continental near the Piazza del Campo.
