Day 2: Jumilla- Land of the Monastrell

By March 19, 2013Winemakers

The last day of the Fallas when they burn all 700+ of the beautiful papier maché statues scattered throughout Valencia. I still can’t figure out the symbolism. But it does make quite a moving impression.

We traveled to Alicante and Jumilla today to visit the 2 top wineries of the area: Volver and Juan Gil. Lunch at Paco Gandia, supposedly the best paella in Spain, was spectacular and the wines were superb. Apart from the top end wines, Volver and Juan Gil produce excellent value wines that are hard to beat. If you like deep, rich fruit laden wines with structure, try the monastrell wines from Jumilla.
