With two glorious wine tours and a safari behind me, I can now categorically advise every wine lover to add Capetown to your bucket list. Mind you, when I say Capetown and wine, I am referring to the Greater Capetown area including Constantia and Stellenbosch.
So here are my top experiences and/or observations, in no particular order:
Mandela moments: meeting his oldest daughter in NY just prior to our tours; visiting Soweto and his bullet-studded home; the Apartheid Museum; seeing the 3 prisons, including Robben Island
Safari, and seeing the Big Five (n.b. if you ever go on a safari, make sure you get all your immunizations and medication. We were in a so-called malaria free zone but one of our safari participants- who did not take prior medication- came down with malaria and had to be hospitalized)
Best Wine Moments: meeting Brad Patton, winemaker at Buitenverwachting, and tasting his wine selected as #63 in the Wine Spectator’s 2014 Top 100 Wines; meeting Ken Forrester and tasting his fabled FMC in his presence;
Most Impressive Tasting Room: Hands down, it’s Delaire-Graff
Best Tasting: Kanonkop, with the 3 verticals of pinotage, cab and syrah
Most Disappointing Tasting: Lanzerac
Most Disappointing Wines: Constantia Glen (although they have a stellar view)
Best Kodak moment: Seeing Table Mountain in person, from the distance and on top
Most Moving Experience: Visiting a Township (aka shantytown) and having lunch
More Form than Substance: The Ernie Els Winery
And there you have it: my Top 10 South Africa moments
Note to myself: Add Hartenburg to my list of wineries to visit next time
