Our tour of Campania has started and with a flourish. Yesterday, for a pre-tour, we went to the beautiful island of Ischia for a fabulous tasting on the top of the island with a stupendous panorama of the Bay of Naples. Then we had a lunch with typical Ischian cuisine that featured rabbit. It was truly a memorable day, especially tasting the Tre Bicchieri award-winning Frassitelli Biancolella in the vineyard high up on top of Ischia. Produced in limited quantities by Casa D’Ambra, this wine is not available in the States, so I am bringing one back for my collection.
Our guide was the delightful Diana Mattera, wife of the winemaker-owner, who is an American citizen who has lived most of her life in Italy. Her father emigrated to the US many years ago and her brother and sister still live in the States.
Ischia is like being in Paradise and it’s difficult to imagine the sordid living conditions that forced many Ischians to emigrate throughout the world.
Casa D’Ambra was founded in 1888 and they have a history of producing outstanding wines. They are part of the movement to save local grape varieties and thanks to their efforts, winelovers can also enjoy wines made from Forastera and Per”E Palummo as well as the Biancolella.
Today we went on a walking tour of the heart of old Naples, Spaccanapoli. We passed at least 7 churches on this street which was the original street as laid out by the Romans. We walked into the Cathedral during the showing of the vial of San Gennaro’s blood which is congealed but mysteriously becomes liquid on May 1 and also in September, where it is also celebrated in NYC.
