Welcome to Hungary

Hungary produces quite a bit of red and white table wines and Bull’s Blood, as its name indicates, is a deep, full-bodied red.

However Hiungary’s claim to fame is its sweet wine called Tokay. The grape used is furmint. The grapes are allowed to undergo the same ‘noble rot’ as the grapes of Sauternes, concentrating their sugar and flavors into a delicious nectar.

Tokay is kept in narrow, pitch-black tunnels cut in the lava of ancient volcanoes. The quality of tokay diminished during the Communist years and only lately has foreign interest in the area increased. Many well-known winemakers have established relationships in the region and the potential for the return of this fame is certain.
