11-day / 10-night Greece Wine Tour of the Mainland (Peloponnese/Central) & the Greek Isles
Greece has everything a wine lover could ask for: wine, cuisine and culture. According to Ray Isle of Food & Wine Magazine, “Greek wines may be the most underrated on the planet.” We tend to agree. Greek wines keep drawing more attention and the country is earning its way into one of the top wine destinations in the world. Greek cuisine is world famous and the Greek temples are just a small part of the historical legacy which contributed to Western Civilization.
Everyone associates the Parthenon and Greek temples with Greece so we know about the cultural dimensions of a visit. Greek cuisine is unique in the world and needs no introduction thanks to the exposure we have from the many Greek restauranteurs. But when it comes to wine, there are 7 wine regions, 28 appellations and more than 200 grape varieties spread across Greece, making expert planning and guidance a benefit. With Wine Lovers Tours, you can be assured that you will visit among the very best wineries from some of the key, most notable regions.
Our focus on our Greece “Classics” Mainland & Islands tour will be on the very best food and wine these areas have to offer and experiencing many of the newer wineries that are making world class wines.
You’ll stay in Athens, where you’ll visit many of Attica’s top wineries as well as cultural sites such as the world famous Parthenon/Acropolis.
You’ll also stay in the charming seaport town of Nafplion, our base as you explore the surrounding wines, food and history of the Peloponnese. Intermixed with winery visits, you’ll also visit the ancient sites of Corinth and Epidavros.
A visit to Greece is not complete without a visit to its islands and the islands of Crete and Santorini are a paradise for wine lovers. Both islands are known for their stunning beauty and outstanding wines.
Crete has the legacy of the Minoan civilization and according to Greek Mythology is also the birthplace of Zeus. It has a unique cuisine and remarkably wonderful wines that wine lovers need to experience. Crete is a huge island, in fact, it is the largest of the Greek Islands and fifth largest of the Mediterranean Sea.
We’ll stay in the charming seaside town of Chania and visit nearby wineries. We’ll also venture to the other side of the island for our stay in the capital city of Heraklion. While in Heraklion, we’ll be sure to visit Knossos and the Archeological Museum (the world’s finest collection of Minoan art). Luckily, many of the best Cretan wineries are relatively close to our bases in Heraklion and Chania so travel is minimized.
We’ll also board a high-speed hydrofoil which whisks us to the magical volcanic island of Santorini. As for Santorini, words alone can not do justice to the breathtaking views. No matter your age, Santorini makes you feel young again. And its wines especially the Assyrtico will make you swoon.
You’ll also be impressed by the unique trellis system used on the island: the vines are shaped in the form of a nest-like circle, low to the ground, to protect from the strong winds. During our stay on this magical island we’ll also have a spectacular Greek cooking lesson and a sunset catamaran cruise.
This is a cultural/wine experience of a lifetime and when this tour is over on May 25, you’ll return home with new appreciation of the wines, food and history of Greece.
