Explore the Castles and Wineries of the Loire Valley while staying in one!
The Loire Valley has been called the Valley of Kings and a fascinating way to learn about French history is to follow its architectural evolution in this area, from the medieval fortresses at Montrichard, Chinon, Loches and Langeais and then on to the glorious castles in Amboise, Blois, Chenonceau and Chambord.
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of castles along the Loire Valley and it is very much a fairytale setting. For history buffs, I strongly recommend “The Road from the Past” by Ina Caro. She described the Loire Valley as ‘enchanted,…like a necklace containing a thousand Renaissance jewels.’
And the Loire is also famous for producing outstanding wines- dry, semi-dry and sweet whites, fine sparkling wines, luscious rosés and remarkably good reds. We will cover the Loire in 2 parts/tours: by land when we focus on the eastern part from Tours to Sancerre and by river when we focus on the western part from Nantes to Tours which immediately follows.
On our land tour of the Loire, we will stay 3 nights in one of those fairytale-like castles and use it as our base to explore the Eastern section of the Valley, from Sancerre to Tours. All meals are included and we’ll dine every evening in the castle.
Besides wineries, we’ll be sure to visit the two most significant chateaux of Chambord and Chenonceaux.
When the land tour is over on Oct. 22, you may wish to join us on the river cruise that will focus on the wines and culture of the western Loire. Two great ways to experience one of the most picturesque areas in France.
